Landings and takeoffs in a 62 mph crosswind

Here’s some spectacular footage of landings and takeoffs at Birmingham airport in the UK during Storm Doris, earlier this year.  The takeoff runs are almost as spectacular as the landings, as the planes are shoved sideways and have to take off ‘crabbing’ into the wind at a very sharp angle.  I’m glad I wasn’t aboard any of them!

I’d say the pilots earned their pay that day . . .

  1. It looks like it's really hard on tires and landing gear struts.

    Had I been a passenger on a few of those, I would have left permanent hand prints in the arms of my seat.
