Project Yehudi – on film

Back in 2009 I published Weekend Wings #34, which looked at the development, current status of, and future prospects for stealth technology.  Among the technologies I mentioned was Project Yehudi, which originated during World War II.  Briefly, it placed lights on the frontal aspect of anti-submarine aircraft, which could be adjusted to the level of brightness of the sky around and behind the plane.  This enabled it to get much closer to its target before it could be seen.

I was therefore fascinated to discover that YouTube had a video clip about Project Yehudi, and a modern test illustrating how well the concept works.  Here it is.

It’s been reported that active stealth technologies (including lighting the skin of an object) are very much alive and well today.  It would be interesting to hear the views of the originators of Project Yehudi about that.  They’d probably be very interested – but unsurprised.

  1. Huh. counter-intuitive to say the least. But it sort of makes sense. It's a Jewish given name – I wonder the origin of it's being selected.
