Nuclear-powered icebreakers in the Arctic

The Web site English Russia has published a spectacular photo essay about these immense ships, the largest icebreakers ever constructed, and the only ones to be nuclear-powered. Here are a few photographs to whet your appetite.

There are many more photographs at the link, including larger versions of the few I’ve reproduced here. Very interesting viewing, and highly recommended.

  1. These are how the Russians supply their cities above the arctic circle. There is also serious talk about opening the Northern Sea Route. Its a route through the arctic seas along Russia's northern coast. Its a seagoing shortcut to Europe across the top of the world. The Finns build ice strengthened ships that are meant to escorted by these ice breakers.

  2. Awesome is too short a word!
Check out the North Truckers in the same site: absolutely mind-blowing.
It is indeed a different world.

  3. That entire site is amazing. Here's one from a Russian soldier fighting in Afghanistan, all done with a ballpoint pen!
