Can you tell a larp from a vire-spannel?

You can’t? Well, I couldn’t, either, until I read a very interesting article in the Daily Mail about some of England’s more obscure regional words. The words in question mean:

LARP: (from Cheshire) a wasp.

VIRE-SPANNEL: (from the Isle of Wight) A dog given to lying before the fire.

The article lists many more words for your linguistic enjoyment. Fun reading – and even more fun to use some of them in conversation, and watch the expressions of incomprehension on the faces of your friends!
