Doofus Of The Day #221

Today’s Doofi – yes, it’s another plural award – are the unnamed occupants of a car in Switzerland.

A car traveling on a motorway in Switzerland lost all four wheels simultaneously, coming to an immediate halt in the middle of the highway, police said on Saturday.

The car had just stopped and the passengers had changed from winter to summer wheels themselves, a common task in Switzerland where there is plenty of snow in winter, but used the wrong nuts when mounting the new set.

“When they then drove back on to the motorway, all of the wheels disconnected,” St Gallen cantonal police said in a statement. “Luckily, no one was injured and no other vehicle was damaged.”

I must mention this one to Miss D. Apparently lots of people in Alaska follow this sort of winter/summer tire-swap routine. However, I suspect that few of them, if any, get their nuts wrong!

  1. I have never heard of having different nuts for different tires. But then, in Missouri, we don't have to change tires with the season given the design of modern tires. I remember when I was a child, pickups mounted snow/mud-grips Fall through Spring, and then other better load-bearing tires during planting and harvest season.

That was 50 years ago and we didn't have different lugnuts for the tires.

  2. Some friends of mine and I have started a Military History blog and came upon this one researching the latest Tamil "Air Force" story that was covered here on February.

That said, we wanted to invite you to visit civilianmilitaryintelligencegroup.com.

There are a lot of military lovers here and we thought Peter that we would invite you over.

  3. They had different nut sizes? Why in the world would you get rims with different nut sizes? That's asking for trouble!

    The mind, it boggles…
