Seems like a defensive behavior to me, trying to scare of predators.
They're lucky it didn't kill them, after all, all the other animals in that country seem to have that ability.
I guess that's one of the few creatures there they can take liberties with.

Mostly you just have to make sure the little fellas don't take your finger tip off. Otherwise they're quite cute and mostly run away.
