That’s going to cost someone a pretty penny . . .

Last Sunday the Carnival Vista, a brand-new cruise ship that entered service only three months ago, was leaving Messina in Sicily.  Unfortunately (perhaps due to the crew’s inexperience in maneuvering the 133,500 ton vessel), she passed far too close to a small craft marina.  Her wake would have been bad enough, but her stern thrusters made it much worse.  Watch the video in full-screen mode for best results.

The damage to the marina has been initially estimated at about $250,000 – and that’s not including the boats, yachts and luxury vessels swamped and sunk in the process.

  1. Ship was almost aground. The prop wash was that bad as it was basically a tsunami. The entire water column was displaced and when it hit the shallows of the marina, it rose up. Where were the tugs?
