What’s happening to the US death rate, and why?

Here’s an ominous note on which to start 2022.

The head of Indianapolis-based insurance company OneAmerica said the death rate is up a stunning 40% from pre-pandemic levels among working-age people.

“We are seeing, right now, the highest death rates we have seen in the history of this business – not just at OneAmerica,” the company’s CEO Scott Davison said during an online news conference this week. “The data is consistent across every player in that business.”

. . .

Davison said the increase in deaths represents “huge, huge numbers,” and that’s it’s not elderly people who are dying, but “primarily working-age people 18 to 64” who are the employees of companies that have group life insurance plans through OneAmerica.

“And what we saw just in third quarter, we’re seeing it continue into fourth quarter, is that death rates are up 40% over what they were pre-pandemic,” he said.

“Just to give you an idea of how bad that is, a three-sigma or a one-in-200-year catastrophe would be 10% increase over pre-pandemic,” he said. “So 40% is just unheard of.”

. . .

“What the data is showing to us is that the deaths that are being reported as COVID deaths greatly understate the actual death losses among working-age people from the pandemic. It may not all be COVID on their death certificate, but deaths are up just huge, huge numbers.”

He said at the same time, the company is seeing an “uptick” in disability claims, saying at first it was short-term disability claims, and now the increase is in long-term disability claims.

There’s more at the link.

I’m not a doctor, and I didn’t stay at a Holiday Inn Express last night, but I’ll advance three hypotheses for the increase in death rates:

  1. Many people were unable to obtain health care for other serious medical conditions (e.g. cancer, heart disease, etc.) during the height of the COVID-19 crisis, leading to increased death rates from those causes;
  2. The known dangers of the COVID-19 vaccines are having their effect, causing a surge in post-vaccination deaths (which will doubtless be ascribed to the illnesses caused or triggered by the vaccines, rather than the vaccines themselves);
  3. The enforced lockdowns, “fear propaganda” and social separation have affected those with mental health issues, exacerbating them and leading to a surge in medical consequences – up to and including self-neglect (leading to potentially lethal health issues) and suicide.

Those are my SWAGs (scientific wild-assed guesses), anyway.  I suppose time will tell if I’m wrong – although the health authorities might not.  These days, I trust health authorities to tell the truth just as much as I trust the sun to rise in the west and set in the east.

This is, of course, yet another symptom of the disintegration of our society.  It’s not just a medical matter.  It’s soul-deep.  Why are none of those insurance executives asking, “Why is this happening?  What factors in our society, that previously prevented this from happening, have been taken away, opening the floodgates to it?  What new factors have been introduced to our society to encourage it?  And why aren’t we doing something about it?”

Allow me to give you my perspective as a Christian pastor, an unfortunately all-too-widely-experienced man of the world, and one who’s seen societies in turmoil on three continents over several decades.  What we’re seeing in America today is the culmination of many, many years of slow but steady encroachment on everything to do with traditional moral values, the rule of law, and the foundational principles of our society.  Erase the Constitution and the rule of law, and the law becomes what someone says it means.  There is no longer a firm, unyielding yardstick against which to measure that – and if you say it means something different, then you’d better be more powerful than the other guy, so you can make sure your perspective beats his (literally).  When there are no values, the lack of values becomes a value in itself.  If you’ll do anything to win – whatever it takes – you will win against someone who clings to values and won’t act against them, because you’ll go places and do things that he won’t.

We’re seeing precisely that outcome in the attitude of the Biden administration, the Democratic Party and the progressive left – and the oligarchs and extremists behind all three – to the rest of America.  The increasing death rate is merely a symptom of that.  The malaise, the rot, goes much, much deeper.  The rot that is overtaking (has overtaken) our health care system is doing the same to an entire society.  The death rate is merely a symptom of a far deeper and more corrosive cause.

I no longer worry about how to overturn and uproot that on a national level. I can’t, not as a single citizen, and there’s no prospect whatsoever that I ever will have that power.  What I, as an individual, can do is to ensure that I live my life according to the principles I believe God sets out for us, and that our Founding Fathers laid down for us.  I can choose to live in a community and among people who strive to do the same.  I can insist that those principles be followed in my community, and take action, even strong action, if they’re not, because of those shared values.  If others try to infiltrate our community who don’t share those values, we can do all in our power to keep them out, or convert them, whichever is most fruitful.  (Note that this has nothing to do with race, creed, color, national origin, or anything else.  See President Theodore Roosevelt on “hyphenated-Americans”.  His words apply not just to national origin, but to color-Americans, ethnic-Americans and all the rest.  Identity politics seeks to destroy his vision of unity as Americans, replacing it with insular, small-minded intolerance.  Tragically, in many of our communities, it’s succeeded.)  Together we, in our communities, can do our bit to make America real in our midst;  and, perhaps, we can inspire others to take that seed out from our midst to plant it in other places, share it, nurture it, and help it to grow.

The solution to our problems begins at home, not in Washington D.C.  So does the solution to the national death rate issue.  What are we, individually and as communities, doing to deal with the underlying issues?

  1. Why are none of those insurance executives asking, "Why is this happening? What factors in our society, that previously prevented this from happening, have been taken away, opening the floodgates to it? What new factors have been introduced to our society to encourage it? And why aren't we doing something about it?"

We do ask those questions, just not publicly. Insurance is one of the most regulated industries there is. Challenging the preferred narrative is a good way to talk your way into a state department of insurance audit.

    1. If true, Greyman, tell us; what are these professionals concluding is the cause? Inquiring minds, yada, yada….

  2. Peter,
Your 3 guesses and your rationale for why are both very sound, but also, Covid is part of the globalist eite's plan to reduce the population to "sustainable" numbers (the Georgia guide stones).

I have read statements from indpendent physicians (those who have not drunk the Kool-Aid) that say that Fauci's methods have caused the detahs of over 500,000 patients, plus an estimated 60,000 childen under the age of 18.This is Mengele category stuff, and in a sane world, Fauci and his ilk would be arrested and hanged for mass murder.

Here is Dr Robert Malone's take on it- it sounds like he is finally wondering about the depopulation angle.

  3. Your hypothesis #2 — deaths from vaccine injury — should not be underestimated.

We've been hearing about pro soccer players in Europe collapsing on the field or in training — ultra fit, ultra healthy individuals who have had thorough checkups at least once a year starting as teenagers.

Oh, but that is selection bias, claim the Defenders of the Narrative — sudden cardiac arrests have always been an unfortunate occurrence, you are just noticing it more because you are looking for it, yadda yadda.

An article in American Thinker dispels this claim. Even limited to only official data from FIFA (the world soccer federation), the numbers paint a clear picture: there has been a FIVE-FOLD INCREASE in sudden cardiac deaths of FIFA players in 2021.

    Bob NC–
Georgia Guidestones asks for world population to be lowered to 500 million, right? I don't see either THIS virus or THESE vaxxes approaching such a death toll (close to seven BILLION would have to be killed).

  4. I will salt in here a couple other sources that lend perspective. One is Matthew Crawford over at Rounding the Earth blog. He has a series exploring the idea that Western civilization has rotted to the point where sociopaths and psychopaths are no longer shunned and purged from society but rather rewarded, promoted, and advanced. A quick glance around corporate and govt reveals the predominance of socio and psychopathic individuals at the upper levels. We ask ourselves, How could these people knowingly inject innocents with toxic drugs and deny life saving care? For a psychopath it's par for the course. They enjoy it.

For another source, if you're able to tolerate his potty mouth, Mike Moore and his podcast The Thomas Paine morning show is brutal truth about how corrupt all our leaders are now.

  5. To refine a bit on Peter's idea of taking action locally, we must bear in mind where our locality fits in the larger picture. For example, the prospects for a thriving patriotic and godly community in LA county or Westchester NY are all but doomed. Not because there aren't good people there. There are good people all over this great land. We have only been brainwashed to think that the collectivists are numerous. But the problem is that a righteous community will soon be overwhelmed in a state thoroughly controlled by evil. So we should all think long and hard about where we choose to take our stand. If you decide to do that in CA or CT or NY, knowing the odds against you, then God bless you. Peter would have good insight I'm sure about whether relocating to a Red state now is better for the long run. It's only a matter of time until this gets hot, so be sure your town is part of a larger network of patriots who can stand together.

I agree – the Covid virus, variants, and vaxxes probably cannot, by themselves, reach that staggering number.TPTB have realized that the Covid virus is not as lethal as they had hoped.

But there are two things to consider:
    – there are likely several more variants already lined up and waiting; remember that this was a virus created for a "vaccine" not vice versa
    – I believe that Fauci and his Wuhan gang are secretly continuing their on "gain of function" weaponization.

Plus, when you add in the "collateral" deaths of patients with chronic diseases who cannot get treated because of Covid, over time it could get close to that number.

And I bet this is why we are hearing rumors lately of smallpox.

  7. I agree more if Covid-19 is called the Globalist Project. We humans, don't want to be fooled again, if we look at the mortality rate, the percentage of those who die because of covid-19 is not true, I've seen the news in Indonesia, there are patients who die because of blood sugar or diabetes, then the household The hospital forced the patient's family to sign a death certificate due to Covid-19.

  8. I agree that moral decay is the root cause. It is the greed of hospital administrators that dictate the course of care for covid patients, even though that course of care has been shown to often result in death for the patient. The hospitals stand to lose federal dollars if they allow ivermectin, HCQ, or other "unapproved" treatments. I am sure there are other federal guidelines that have caused hospitals to restrict normal care during the "pandemic crisis" that once again, are tied to loss of federal dollars. And of course, there is the greed of government officials, healthcare associations, etc. who stand to lose large sums of money from big pharma if they don't follow the offical narrative of the jab.

We have reached, if not exceeded, the level of corruption of the old Roman empire. One has to wonder how much longer before everything comes to an end, as it did for the Roman empire.

  9. Anecdotally, our uncle owns a very large funeral business, 22 locations. He has been telling us since March how his business began spiking in January, now, as of December 1st, individual services rendered are up just over 400%based on 22 years of hard records. On a monthly basis, the average age of decedent is 59, 55,& 56, respectively for the last 3 months. That compared to his 4 year average age was 81, overall. He has seen an 8 fold spike in stillborn/newborn deaths. He claims that almost 100% of the decedents, less accident victims and very elderly, either "died suddenly" or " died unexpectedly".
Additionally, the organization associated with the career I have notifies us of deaths within same. We average 4 or 5 a year, 3 in 2020, retirees mostly. Now though, we had 56 deaths in 2021, most age 31-63, only 4 we're retired. And, of course, every obituary I read, which is almost all, say "died suddenly or died unexpectedly".
Lots of private and corporate aircraft crashes, way above the norm or average.
    For what it's worth.

  10. CDC All Cause and Natural cause was 16% of 2019 in 2020 and 20% over in 2021. Looking by Age it affects the youngest the least but <25 years is up 108% and 110% respectively. Age 25-44 seems most impacted with 25-44 2021 at 142% of 2019 (Only 124% in 2020 compared to 2019). Older age groups are less impacted.

Just saw an article that Omicron can reinfect people who have had COVID (natural immunity) and of course anyone with the jab can get it as well. Strangely enough Omicron appears to boost immunity against Delta, but not the other way around. Most of the people who wanted the jab had it by April, if the jab was a net positive then 2021 numbers should be less than 2020, but they are greater.

In 2021 we had the vax and many states relaxed their restrictions, yet rate of death is greater than 2020. While Peter's 3 causes are good hypothesis I would think that at some point 2021 numbers would go below 2020 and approach 2019, but it does not happen. The jab is a net negative. However, no one is looking at the data.

  11. If explanation #1 were correct, you'd see shorter lifespans among members of religions that reject modern medicine. In fact they live as long on average as everyone else.

  12. People need to realize that the birth rate is going to drop badly, due to the vaxx effects. They will get a double barrel effect, vaxx direct deaths, and vaxx caused infertility, for world population numbers.
IIRC, some researchers were claiming the vaxx would kill most by year 5 after the jab, due to accumulating circulatory system damage. Lack of births won't become visible to the public for a few years, probably. The more jabs, the more damage the individual accrues, so avoid boosters!

  13. One can't slaughter most of the peasantry without, you know, killing off a lot of the peasantry. But think of the glorious sacrifices you insects are making for us, your betters. Your hearts should stir with pride as they cease beating!

  14. John T. Block –

Based on the data I see, Peter's hypotheses 1 and 3 are true. I believe 2 to be true as well but I do not have data that makes it rock solid no doubt certain. 40% of the excess death we are seeing is attributable to covid, which means covid is somewhere on the death certificate.

  15. No answers here, but I am glad to see the truth proclaimed. At least one piece of the Great Reset has already occurred, it seems. How much it affects us individually and our tribes depends on the values we believe and how badly we'll fight for them… even if it seems we are the mouse in that cartoon of "The Last Great Act of Defiance," believers in Christ have already won and these evil creatures will go to their deserved eternal damnation.

Thanks, Peter — and "in spite of," Happy New Year.
