Today’s award goes to the dumbasses who thought up this stunt.
Two masked men wearing hoodies and wielding handguns burst into the Pine Eagle Charter School in this tiny rural community on Friday. Students were at home for an in-service day, so the gunmen headed into a meeting room full of teachers and opened fire.
Someone figured out in a few seconds that the bullets were not drawing blood because they were blanks and the exercise was a drill, designed to test Pine Eagle’s preparation for an assault by “active shooters” who were, in reality, members of the school staff. But those few seconds left everybody plenty scared.
. . .
The surprised staff had received training from the Union County Sheriff’s Office on active shooter scenarios. They had been told they had some options, such as not rushing out of their classrooms when gunfire erupted, and locking and barricading their doors.
They weren’t expecting a drill like this, and they were caught by surprise when the two men entered and began firing.
There’s more at the link. A tip o’ the hat to reader A. Q. for mentioning it.
There’s a reason why they don’t try drills like that in the area where I live. The odds are pretty good that a teacher would be armed (despite regulations to the contrary), or a passerby would notice something going down and alert armed neighbors. The “active shooters” would rapidly have been deactivated! That’s not likely in a place like Oregon, though – in fact, the exercise merely restated the obvious. Clearly, if you’ve turned your school into a defenseless victim zone, those inside it are bound to get hurt, sooner or later!

Too bad there wasn't a baseball coach in the room with a bat nearby. It would have made a really great headline.

Downright fun saying it with a lisp…

Teachers and students are being told to fight back by throwing books, chairs, etc at the attackers, right?
So the doofus – doofii (plural) thought it would be a good idea to endanger the safety of not just the teachers and children (hello panic) but the supposed attackers?
And we wonder why schools can't educate with geniuses like this running the show.
Actually, Oregon law currently allows the concealed carrying of handguns inside a public school. Not sure about charter schools, however.
And, of course, the Democrats in the Oregon legislature have made changing that one of their "number one" priorities, because making the folks in a public school even more helpless is a super good idea.
Excellent point Peter… But then it 'was' Oregon (now a northern part of Kalifornia)…
If they'd tried that where I teach, there's at least three teachers that I know of, probably more, who would have been swinging bats and chairs and weighted walking sticks.
