A definition for our times

A tip o’ the hat to reader Nate W., who sent me the link to this definition at the Urban Dictionary.  (Click the screenshot for a larger and clearer view.)

Sounds like a very useful term.  I must remember it, and use it.  Nothing like deflating a progressive left-wing liberal’s stream of consciousness blathering with a word that makes them think, for once!

  1. Yeah, I like it! A readily available response to any of that idiotic nonsense they use to try to avoid engaging intellectually, and worded in a manner that isn't outwardly accusing. "Hmpf, sounds like bigoteering, to me." And now I've gotten to add a new word to my stupid spell checking dicktionary!

  2. Closely related to "Othering." That thing that making a group of people not part of the over-group, thus making the others something less than humam.

  3. Bigoteering is often accompanied by kafkatrapping. A Kafkatrap is an argument of the form "Your refusal to acknowledge that you are guilty of {sin, racism, sexism, homophobia, oppression…} confirms that you are guilty of {sin, racism, sexism, homophobia, oppression…}".

As Eric Raymond, who coined the term points out, "the kafkatrap is a form of argument that is so fallacious and manipulative that those subjected to it are entitled to reject it based entirely on the form of the argument, without reference to whatever particular sin or thoughtcrime is being alleged."
