Mount Colima blows its top

There was a pretty spectacular volcanic explosion at Colima in Mexico yesterday.  This time-lapse video compresses about four minutes of footage into about 30 seconds.  Watch it in full-screen mode for the best results.

That’s only the second time I’ve seen a mountain-top blown away, although this was on a much smaller scale than the previous one – Mount St. Helens in 1980.

I’d as soon be far, far away from those things when they go off . . .

  1. I was on a sailboat about sixty miles from the mountain. At anchor, the mainsail up, hanging freely, no breeze. The sails shook lightly and there were three booms. I thought the navy was doing bombing runs on an island range nearby. That was May 18, 1980, between Port Townsend and Port Angles, WA.

  2. Hope it doesn't have a proportional economic impact that Mt St Helens had.
We had cancellations of over $700,000 worth of signed contracts in the first month from Eastern Washington.
