Ran some dogpile and truthorfiction.com searches. Snopes claims the story is untrue as written (she searched Silver Star awardees). Still a helluva tearjerker and representative of what we wish were true.

I really hate crying this early in the morning.
I'm skeptical too. It isn't that I can't be convinced, but I reckon if a man won a Silver Star there would be some mention of it that Google could find.
