My irreverent muse was inspired by Borepatch this week, when he posted this video clip. It’s completely inaccurate, of course – Lizzie Borden was found not guilty – but it’s nevertheless very funny.
So much for history!
Now that my muse had been properly motivated, I went digging through my memories for more funny songs. I found several. First up, Lonnie Donegan, the famous skiffle singer, had a major hit in Britain in 1960 with his “My Old Man’s a Dustman“. The original recording is well known, but in a later live performance, Donegan changed several of the verses to ones I’d never heard before – so here it is. (The classic version may be heard here.)
Staying on that side of the Atlantic Ocean, here’s Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren in one of the songs from their 1960 collaborative album, “Peter and Sophia“. This one’s “Bangers and Mash”. I can recall giggling at my father singing this song, while Mom served up the eponymous dish at our home in South Africa.
Still in England, and approximately the same vintage (or a little earlier), here’s well-known comedy duo Flanders and Swann poking fun at the architectural and fine living establishment with their song “Design for Living”.
Finally, let’s cross the Atlantic Ocean and enjoy Canadian duo Bowser and Blue taking the starch out of the medical profession, as they sing of the Colorectal Surgeon. Yes, I know I’ve put this one on my blog before, but it’s so much fun I’m going to do it again!
(Their perspective on vascectomies is also a hoot.)
Well . . . so much for Sunday Morning Music this week!
Oh my. I'd not encountered Bowser and Blue before. I see I might need to check up on things some. Thank you.
Where is CHARLE AND THE MTA? 8>)
All good ones! Thanks!
How could you omit The Old bazaar in Cairo?
It's English so the culinary references may lose off American readers but FWIW … >};o)
Love Flanders and Swann.
Need to post some Tom Lehrer.
Wow, that recording of Lizzie Borden is from the record that my parents had. I haven't heard it in so many years but I could remember every word (and scream!).
Thank you so much.
