An unusual Christmas gift

I’m amused by an advertisement at Project Boats.

What do you get the man who has everything for Christmas?

A SUBMARINE OF COURSE!

Shop early to beat the rush!

  • This craft is powered by 2 X 2000 HP diesels or 2 X 1400 HP electric engines.
  • This unique craft when converted would make an extraordinary yacht.

Yes, you can buy a ‘Whiskey’-class submarine, produced by the former Soviet Union, for a mere $497,000 – and there’s a bulk discount if you want more than one!

The FAQ for this entry provides further information:

1.) How old is this vessel and how many years service would it still give as a military vessel?

It was build in 1950’s. The hull is at least 19 mm thick all around. The sub was docked three years ago at which time they made ultrasound scanning. It was found to be in good condition and insurable.

2.) Is it possible for this vessel to have a refit that would bring it up to current day standards as an operational naval vessel and what would a refit like this cost?

When the Russians sold the boat they took care that it wouldn’t be used as a “weapon” against them. They removed some parts. This parts we are assured are available. But parts will not come with the craft. The former Soviet block countries are always looking for the contracts for work. This work always makes people happy. We have been assured that the governments would work with us to refit this vessel to a pleasure craft.

3.) How much will it cost me to purchase this submarine?

The “Whiskey Class” Submarine and six more like it are available for purchase from the owner for one easy payment of $497,000 USD. Discount available for fleet purchase.

I think I’ll mention this to Boudreaux and Thibodeaux, down on the bayou. Might be the perfect replacement for their airboats, when goin’ after them pesky alligators during hunting season, down in the swamps. They can use torpedoes instead of their good ol’ .30-30‘s – which would skin out the beasts as well as kill them, all in one go! Of course, the resulting alligator hide might be a bit fragmented . . .

  1. I wonder how long it’ll be before the South American drug gangs buy those old subs. They would be an improvement from their “semi-submersibles” they’re using now to smuggle drugs to the USA.
