Ashbutt has learned about the treadmill desk

Our Blogorado kitten, Ashbutt (now fourteen months old, fifteen-plus pounds, and every inch and ounce of him a kittenish Maine Coon) has discovered the delights of Miss D.‘s treadmill desk.  She’ll walk slowly on it while using the computer, and has grown accustomed to a black kitten stalking her footsteps on the mat, reaching up to bat at her ankle from time to time when he wants attention.

Today he learned how to jump from the floor, to the windowsill, to the top shelf on the wire bookshelf we’ve installed in front of the treadmill, to serve as a computer desk.  He’s very proud of himself. (Click the image for a larger view.)

Now he’ll be batting at our heads, as well as our heels! We now understand why Maine Coons are said to be “kittenish” for at least the first three years of their lives. Ashbutt will play at the drop of a hat, and drop it himself if you don’t get the hint (including firmly leading you straight to his toy of the moment, and demanding that you stop whatever else it is that you’re doing and play with him for a while).

He’s fun to have around.

  1. Bring out the string or the laser pointer and my 14 year old Maine Coon forgets that he isn't a kitten and will chase it to exhaustion.

  2. It's not possible to run a Maine Coon out of energy. At least, with ours it isn't. She's 5 and still insists she's a kitten. She loves to play, give purrs, and get brushed. She brings us to her toys, or favorite play area of the day, to get us to play with her. When she wants to get her fur brushed, she's demanding. I swear that she would bring her brush to us if she could figure out how to pick it up.

  3. Shamandin:

drill some holes in the back and thread a ty-wrap or parachute cord through them. That will give her a handle she can grab with her claws or teeth.
Many years ago, I had a Siemese mix that would retrieve tossed bottlecaps. She thought that was great entertainment.
